What To Do About Swollen Feet In Pregnancy?

Don’t Suffer with Swollen Feet in Pregnancy

Do swollen feet have you wearing sandals throughout your pregnancy?  Are they aching or heavy at the end of the day? Well, no need to suffer, I have just the thing.

General Recommendations

There are several general recommendations you can do like putting your feet up whenever possible, stretching your legs frequently, drinking plenty of water, wearing comfortable shoes, and eating well, but remember to see your doctor to make sure the swelling isn’t part of a more serious problem, such as preeclampsia.  In my opinion, the most effective solution is compressive stockings.

The Poor Man’s Solution

I tried to fix my swelling using the poor man’s (in this case woman’s) solution just by using an Ace wrap around my foot and ankle since I didn’t want to wear a calf, thigh or waist high hosiery due to the terrible heat this summer, which by the way makes the swelling worse.  But, unfortunately, my method is really only effective with very mild edema.

Best Compressive Socks

Since my swelling was worsening, I ultimately decided to invest in compression stockings and found these calf high Sigvaris Maternity Cotton Socks.  Best investment made during pregnancy!  The socks are great to wear around the house.  I bought the 15-20mmHg in pressure which is for more mild to moderate swelling.  I would say if your swelling is mild to invest in the 10-15mmHg socks.  I love these socks because they have a non-constricting top band (so it does NOT cut off your circulation at the calf).  My swelling has improved dramatically and I’m protecting myself from getting varicose veins in the future!  Who doesn’t want that?

If you are planning on investing in compressions stockings or socks, try out the brand Sigvaris.  I was not disappointed.  Sigvaris is a reputable company focused on medical compression garments.  The company also makes stockings of all kinds.  Check it out here at compressionstockings.com.  You can also check out the Sigvaris website to learn more.

Here are some before and after pics.

As with any professional recommendation, each individual should follow the direction of their own treating physician as each circumstance is different.
